Assessment
The ways in which teachers assess and report on student progress have a profound influence on student learning. At Â鶹ÉçÇø School the assessment policy has been designed to support our beliefs about learning and teaching. It aims to identify strengths and weaknesses and provide the basis for effective teaching.
In practical terms this means that students do not receive a single grade for any subject. In place of such a grade, each student receives a number of grades which report directly upon the skill level achieved. The specific skills will obviously differ in different subjects but there is an overall emphasis on the core skills of reading, writing and numeracy. Students are also encouraged to develop their creativity and cultural awareness.
Reporting
At Â鶹ÉçÇø School, Senior School reports are designed to capture and communicate the nature of the courses of study and the learning progress of each student. The reports provide parents and carers with their child’s achievements in a range of behavioural and subject related areas. Results for academic achievements are reported using a percentage, and a student’s effort and dedication are reported using a series of statements that reflect a student’s performance.
Continuous Reporting at Girton – The subject teacher provides written online feedback on the specific Reportable Assessment Task, the grade achieved and a summary of the student’s effort and dedication to the subject in general. Parents and Carers can expect to receive feedback each Term on each child’s general progress via via Girton’s Learning Management System Astra.
Girton’s Schoolbox (Astra) LMS is designed for Australian schools. It is an all-in-one Learning Management System and community portal. It is designed to allow teachers, parents, Carers and students to share information securely online and is used as a teaching and learning tool through all stages of the Girton Journey.  Astra provides Parents, Carers and students with greater insight to the curriculum and access to other useful school information.
By using Astra, students have access to the curriculum documentation relevant to each of the subjects they are undertaking. They can also read their timetables and relevant News bulletins as well as record homework or any other commitments. Parents and Carers can view the same pages that are available to their own children.
The scores for School Assessed Coursework and School Assessed Tasks in the VCE reports are un-moderated and should be used as an indicator only. These scores may be adjusted by the VCAA using Statistical Moderation which is applied to all School Assessments conducted under the VCAA regulations.
